Newport Wins Dual Meet
HILLSBOROUGH, NH — The Newport boys cross-country running team defeated Hillsboro-Deering in a dual meet on Friday, Oct. 6, in Hillsborough.
Elijah Bodanza of Hillsboro-Deering dominated the competition by completing the course in a blazing fast time of 16:46. However, it was the depth of Newport that allowed them to earn the victory as they had the next five finishers. Leading the pack for Newport was Bryce Palmer who finished 2nd in 20:05. Noah Fryman placed 3rd in 20:39, Michael Bohn finished 4th in 21:46, Tristan Hannum was 5th in 23:08 and Joshua Jordan came in 6th in 23:14.
Thetford Woods Trail RunTHETFORD, VT — While some high school students were taking the SATs on Saturday, Oct. 7, more than 900 high school athletes traveled to Thetford Academy for the 32nd Annual Thetford Woods Trail Run. More than 60 teams were present, representing each of the New England states.
Springfield had eight boys competing and finished 40th overall. Spencer Cobb led Springfield in 261st place in 21:41. Also competing for the Cosmos were Braden Wright (23:11), Noah Tunkel (24:18), Brady Noyes (25:54), Lukas Foley (26:08), Tristin Stagner (26:23), Esteban Jimenez (27:27) and Sascha Smith (28:29).
Erica Knudson was the lone girl’s runner for Springfield, finishing in 27:50. Hudson Ranney (27:58) was the only competitor for Windsor.
Springfield and Windsor will return to Thetford for the Vermont State Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28. Prior to the state meet, both teams will compete in the Southern Vermont League B Division Championships on Friday, Oct. 20, at the North Springfield Dam.
Fall Mountain, Newport at Hopkinton Meet
HOPKINTON, NH — The Fall Mountain and Newport cross-country running teams traveled to Hopkinton for a 10 team meet on Wednesday, Oct. 11. FM had strong showings from both teams as the boys placed 2nd and the girls finished 3rd. The Newport boys team placed 7th.
Ben Tetu led the Fall Mountain boys team by placing 5th overall in 18:24. Close behind was David Northcott who finished 7th in 18:34. Fall Mountain was the only boys team with 3 finishers in the top 10 overall as Ben Fritshen placed 10th in 19:28. Also competing for the Wildcats were Tyler St. Pierre (20:40), Braydon Patch (21:27) and Edward Baker (24:37).
Jenna Fillion led the Fall Mountain girls team by finishing 2nd overall in 21:13. Also competing for Fall Mountain was Isabella West (25:08), Kelly Ranta (25:10), Azure Rheaume (26:13), Abigayle Jarvis (26:45), Emily Heddon (26:52) and Ana Lloyd (31:40).
Bryce Palmer was the top finisher for Newport by placing 20th in 20:24. Noah Fryman was next for the Tigers in 21:29, Michael Bohn followed in 22:02, Joshua Jordan (23:34) and Bentley Waterman (39:02) rounded out the finishers for Newport.
With the regular season winding down, Fall Mountain and Newport are both gearing up for the Division 3 State Championships on Sat, Oct. 28 at Derryfield Park in Manchester.
