WINDSOR, VT — Hannah Tenney scored just 33 seconds into the game on Saturday, Oct. 28, and opened the flood gates for the Windsor field hockey team. The team netted 7 first-half goals and won 8-1.
“That is the quickest we have scored all season,” said Windsor Coach Blake Holden. “We have played a very difficult schedule and we learned so much along the way. We are seeing what all that hard work is doing at the perfect time.”
After the lightning score from Tenney, Gabby Gilbert got into the act with a shot inside the near post.
“This game was all or nothing,” said Gilbert, a senior. “We prepared for this and just did our thing.”
Mackenzie Kleefish would add to the first period total with two huge blasts that the keeper had no chance to stop.
“That first goal erased a bit of nervousness then when Gabby scored, we were flying,” said Kleefish.
A change in goalies for Lyndon didn’t phase Windsor at all as Gwen Ambrose got into the act despite her nightmare the night before.
“I had a terrible dream that we lost,” said Ambrose with a big grin across her face. “Thank goodness it wasn’t real.”
Kleefish would put the game away before the first half had ended with 2 more goals as the Jacks cruised into the break leading 7-0. Gilbert would add one more Yellow Jacket goal before Lyndon’s Taylor Ott would get the visitors on the board.
“We came here today to do our job. We played our game and we played smart and hard,” Gilbert said.
No. 3 Windsor will face No. 7 Missisquoi with the winner headed to the University of Vermont on Saturday, Nov. 4, for the state championship game.
