SUNAPEE, NH — On Monday, Nov. 6, Lake Sunapee Protective Association’s Water Quality Buoy made its final voyage into Sunapee Harbor. The buoy gathers year-round water quality and weather data that is used by residents as well as lake scientists around the world. With financial support from the association’s donors, a new buoy with upgraded water quality sensors will be deployed in Lake Sunapee in the spring of 2024.
High quality international science has become a foundation of the association’s work, enhancing scientific understanding of the special environment of the Lake Sunapee Watershed. The water quality buoy was first launched in 2008 at its current location by Loon Island. Data collected from buoy sensors are key components of LSPA’s research collaborations and are shared with partners at the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Virginia Tech and the Global Lake Ecological Observatory Network.
The association, founded in 1898, is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the environmental integrity of the Lake Sunapee region, especially its lakes and watersheds, through education, research and collaborative action.
