’Twas The Night Before Seussified

Mary Carter
Commentary
’Twas the night before Seussified at the Opera House,

All the cast members were stirring and scaring the mouse.

The lighting was hung in the rafters with care,

To highlight Bed-Headed Fred’s lopsided hair.

The costumes were nestled all snug on their racks,

Near the cartons of milk from the yaks of Pekack.

Larissa M. Cahill and Ethan Laushance,

Were taking their place as the show’s commandants.

When deep in the wings, there arose such a clatter,

Belle stopped combing her wig and asked what was the matter?

The light on the stage, like a new-fallen snow,

Marked the spot where the skateboarding posse should go.

When to what did their wondering eyes take full ganders,

But a miniature Fan and three hungry bystanders.

An “anti-grav” hit the room with a force that was huge.

They knew in a moment it must be The Scrooge.

More rapid than binka birds, his castmates they came.

The stage manager whistled and called them by name:

“On Narrators, on Cratchits, on Solicitors Two,

On Four Ghosts, on Ringo and Timmy Loo Hoo.

To the center of the stage, and face the fourth wall,

A warm-up with counting and chanting for all!”

And what did this summons appear to unleash,

But a ghost from the past with a flair for “Capeesh?”

In a Sneetch Band they gathered, the girls and the boys,

Filling the hall with noise, noise, noise, NOISE!

After notes and some quotes and a whole lot of praises,

It was time for the Seussified cast to take “Places!”

The tech crew was ready, the prop table quirky,

With a racket whack racket and a mistletoed turkey.

It’s easy to see that this script calls a truce,

‘Tween the prose of Charles Dickens and the rhyming Doc Seuss.

Excitement soars in a way universal,

When one steps into their last dress rehearsal.

These kids have worked hard to put on a play,

The directors, the stage crew, the entire array.

So, from this humble reporter, I wish you to know:

“BREAK A LEG TO YOU ALL, AND TO ALL, A GREAT SHOW!”
