Sunapee, NH — With only six girls in jerseys for Mount Royal Academy (0-1), including a few seventh graders, they were still able to head into the half with a 25-24 lead over Wilton-Lyndeborough (1-1) on Tuesday night. Although the girls ended up on the wrong side of the scoreboard at the buzzer of a 50-48 nail bitter, they had to walk off the court feeling like a million bucks.
The future is bright for these girls. Seventh-graders Lucy Treece and Jubilee Tremblay will likely find themselves as NHIAA DIV All-State selections down the road.
Treece was ice cold as she hit two huge free throws to give her team a chance to win in the final minutes of the game.
The girls will count on mentoring and leadership from Katherine McMenaman who scored a team-high 19 points for the Knights.
“The girls came out with nerves but fought hard until the end,” said Mount Royal head coach Derek Tremblay. “We honestly have not experienced a game like that in a long time. Most impressive was the relentless effort and willingness to adjust as the game progressed. We tied the last 3 quarters and had multiple chances to make a full comeback in the waning minutes. Our youth showed that they can impact the game. We just have to clean up our decision making with the ball in our hands.”
Wilton-Lyndeborough’s Adri Bausha led the way for her team with 19 points including 4 critical free throws near the end of the game to help give her team the win.
“I was able to maintain my composure by focusing on my breathing and allowing myself to slow down,” said Bausha. “When you’re on the line, you have a good amount of time before you need to shoot and it’s important to lock in and take advantage of that.”
