SUNAPEE, NH — YCN was in the house and the gym was full for a very competitive game between the Sunapee Lakers and Mount Royal Academy (MRA) Knights.
The Lady Knights won a tough victory by a thin margin (33-28) to earn their first program win against the Lakers since the 2018-2019 season.
The Lady Knights had only five fully healthy players at the tip off, and they established a lead in the first quarter which was never lost despite the strong efforts of the Lakers.
Katherine McMeamon helped the Knights jump out to an early lead on her way to a game high 20 points. The Lakers held on to keep the game close with scoring by Jenna Caron (7 game points), Emma Reed (7 points) and Kaitlyn Claus (4 points) to stay within 5 points heading into halftime.
The second half started with a lot of energy on the defensive end of the court for the Lakers holding the Knights to only three points scored in the third to hold onto a 2-point lead going into the fourth quarter.
With the game close in the fourth quarter, neither team gave an advantage. MRA outscored Sunapee by a 12-10 margin in the final frame to close out the victory.
Sunapee dominated on the offensive boards and scored on multiple second chances but couldn’t get it to equate to a win. Emma Reed paced the Lakers with 13 rebounds, Kaitlyn Claus with 11 rebounds and Taylor Goodspeed with 9 rebounds.
“It was a tough win. We were able to make some plays when it mattered the most, and Katherine McMenaman continues to pour in points,” said Derek Tremblay, MRA head coach. “We will need to make better decisions with the ball in our hands in order to reach another level. Most importantly, we need to box out no matter how outsized we may be.”
“We once again stepped up in the second half. Foul trouble hurt us tonight. The girls continued to work together as a team to stay in the game all four quarters,” said Jim Tucker, Sunapee head coach.
