LOWELL, MA — Capping off a busy stretch that featured four games in seven days, including three straight on the road, the Dartmouth women’s basketball team earned a 58-52 win over UMass Lowell on Thursday evening, Dec. 14, at Costello Athletic Center. The Big Green have now won three of their last four.
Picking up a fifth victory, which matches the combined win totals of the 2021-22 and 2022-23 seasons, Dartmouth evened its record at 5-5. UMass Lowell dropped to 0-10 on the season.
Clare Meyer led a trio of Dartmouth scorers in double figures. The sophomore tallied a team-high 12 points, one shy of tying her season high, and grabbed eight rebounds. Victoria Page and Mekkena Boyd joined Meyer in double figures with 10 points each. Doreen Ariik pulled down a game-high 14 boards and now has four double-digit rebounding performances to her credit this season. She entered the game ranking among the top 25 nationally in rebounds per game.
The Big Green defense, which allows fewer points per game than any of its Ivy League counterparts, held their opponent under 60 for the eighth time this season despite the River Hawks connecting on six of their 14 3-point attempts. Mili Carrera scored nearly half of UMass Lowell’s points with her game-high 25 and was 4-of-8 from deep.
Boyd drained a 3-pointer at the 1:10 mark of the second quarter to help the Big Green take a slight lead into halftime. After the River Hawks briefly regained the lead early in the third, it was another Boyd triple that put Dartmouth back on top for good. Meyer scored each of her 12 points in the second half to help the Big Green eventually roll to a double-digit lead by the middle of the fourth quarter.
The River Hawks opened the fourth with one of Carrera’s four 3-pointers to cut the lead to two (42-40), but Dartmouth responded with back-to-back Ariik jumpers to grab a 46-40 advantage, which matched the largest lead for either side up to that point. Dartmouth ran the score to 52-10 by the 5:12 mark thanks in part to two Meyer buckets. The Big Green saw their lead cut to four, 52-48, after Sydney Coombs’ and-one with just under two minutes remaining. Dartmouth was back on top by eight after Mia Curtis and Carrington Washburn both made successful trips to the line to put the game out of reach.
