SUNAPEE, NH — It was an exciting night of basketball in Sherburne gym as the Sunapee Lakers (1-6) earned their first win against a gritty Mascenic (2-3) team on Thursday night, Dec. 21.

The first quarter ended with both teams tied 6-6. In the second quarter, Sunapee girls stepped up the defense and were able to dominate on the boards with numerous rebounds from Emma Reed and Jenna Caron. The Lakers were able to jump out to a 4-point lead at half time.

During the third quarter, the Sunapee Lakers really started to shine. They jumped out to a sizable lead, scoring Mascenic 19 to 6. Mascenic was not going away quietly. They rallied back in the fourth quarter with a 3-point shot by Hannah Zina hoping to lead to a momentum shift. The comeback charge continued with another 3 from Skye Lambert. The Lakers settled down and answered with a fast-break layup from Jenna Caron and Katelynn Claus, and some key rebounds by Emma Reed in the final minutes as they held on for a 38-28 win.

“The team played well as a whole. Everyone contributed to this win from scoring points, to getting rebounds, to playing good defense and supportive cheering from the sideline. Great team effort,” said Jim Tucker, Sunapee head coach. “A very tough Mascenic team pushed Sunapee to play their best game of the season so far.”

Claus led the way for Sunapee with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Reed contributed with 9 points and 11 rebounds. Caron pitched in with 7 points and 9 rebounds.
