On behalf of a grateful city

Mayoral Notes
As the year winds down, I want to reflect on the individuals who have had an impact on our city, who have left the city or council in 2023. These individuals have dedicated their time to moving Claremont in a positive direction.

James Contois was a two-term Ward 2 councilor and made significant contributions. He was an active member of the Conservation and Historic District committees. He participated in many projects working alongside the Conservation Commission. He wanted to preserve our city’s history, recognizing the importance of maintaining our roots while allowing growth.

Matthew Mooshian served the past 2 years as an at-Large councilor. During his term, he showed thoughtful discussion and was always respectful. Matt represented the council as a member of the Claremont Community Television Board.

Jonathan Stone served as Ward 3 councilor for the past 6 years. His commitment and leadership as a councilor have left a mark on our community. His time as the chair of the Policy Committee showed his dedication to thoughtful decision making and tireless efforts in reviewing policies which shape our city.

The past year we also bid farewell to two long-term department heads. At the beginning of 2023, Fire Chief Bryan Burr and Finance Director Lisa Richmond announced they would be retiring in April.

Chief Burr was instrumental in maintaining the safety of our community, working alongside members of the Claremont Fire Department. He also served as the Claremont Municipal Airport manager, overseeing several projects. One project, which related to safety, that many may not have been noticed was a project which cleared the approach ends to the airport. This project allowed the Federal Aviation Administration to open the entire runway for landing, allowing planes to utilize the full 3,100 feet. He worked closely with our consultant, securing several million dollars in federal aid to accomplish projects with no local tax impacts.

Director Richmond spent nearly twenty years working in the finance office. The past few years, she was part of the team created to choose and implement the city’s new finance software, replacing what had been in place for approximately 20 years. Her background provided expertise in fund investing, giving us significant increases in interest revenue.

As we bid farewell to these remarkable individuals, I extend our deepest gratitude for their selfless service. Their collective efforts have enhanced the quality of life for all residents and their work will enable the continued growth and prosperity of our city.

In times when public service often goes unnoticed, it is essential to acknowledge the hard work, integrity and passion that these individuals brought to their roles. The positive changes they made will be seen for generations, having shaped the future of our city.

Let us express our sincerest thanks to Bryan Burr, James Contois, Matthew Mooshian, Lisa Richmond, and Jonathan Stone for their contributions. As they embark on their new journeys, may they carry with them the appreciation and admiration of our community.
