Cleanup of Maple Avenue dry cleaner progressing

WINDSOR, VT — In his report to the Select Board on Tuesday, Dec. 12, Town Manager Tom Marsh said cleanup work at Roger’s Fabricare, at 7 Maple Street, will be completed despite the bankruptcy of one of the insurance companies paying for the work.

According to response.epa.gov, the location “started operating as a dry cleaner in the 1940s and was operated by various owners and operators until 2018, when Roger’s Fabricare closed. The Site has remained vacant and has fallen into disrepair.”

“They had to reshuffle vendors,” he said. “Everything was supposed to be demolished and shipped out,” Marsh said. “If you go there now, it’s demolished in what looks like big duffle bags. It’s going to Alabama.”

He said some of the dry cleaners content went to Michigan on a train, and some went to Connecticut and came back.

“They found out they weren’t going to get paid to take them, so they drove them back and said you can keep them,” she said. “There is more going to Alabama.”

He noted that everything was cleaned up and bagged.

“They will get out of here,” he said. “The bags will be here for a while, until spring, or not, depending on what they do. As far as the safety concerns, that’s been taken care of. Even if the bags go away, they are going to put a big cover over the foundation until springtime, when they can take that out and clean up the Site, finally.”
