BARRE, VT — The Vermont Historical Society will host a series of virtual, history-related events between January and March that cater to fans and historians of the Green Mountain State’s history.
The events will come in three categories: the return of our virtual trivia contest, which will run weekly through the month of January, new installments of the Virtual Speaker Series and a series of virtual roundtable events designed to assist local historical societies, historians and others, which will run monthly from January to March.
The Virtual Vermont Trivia series will run weekly at 7 p.m. starting on Wednesday, Jan. 10. VHS invites the public to come test their knowledge to find out who knows the most about the Green Mountain State.
Winners will have the opportunity to win prizes. Register for the event(s) at tinyurl.com/28y5bwvv.
VHS hosts a regular, virtual speaker series during the winter months, and will continue with two more events in January and February. The first, on Jan. 18, will feature Mariessa Dobrick. Dobrick is an archivist with the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration and will speak about a 1914 murder and how the records held at VSARA can help unravel the story.
On Feb. 15, Dr. David A. Smith of Baylor University will speak about Admiral George Dewey, the subject of his book, “A New Force At Sea: George Dewey and the Rise of the American Navy,” and the role he played in the modernization of the US Navy in the early 20th century. Both talks will take place at noon and will be accessible via Zoom. Register at tinyurl.com/43bct2vp.
Starting in January, VHS will host three informational roundtables to share knowledge, strategies and professional development to members of the public and the League of Local Historical Societies and Museums (a partnership between VHS and more than 190 of the state’s local historical societies).
These roundtables will take place at noon at the end of each month and will explore a variety of issues that face historic organizations in the state.
On Jan. 23, join Alan Berolzheimer, VHS Book Editor, and Andrew Liptak, VHS PR & Guest Services Coordinator, who will talk about VHS’s publishing process and tips and tricks for writers interested in producing their own publications.
On Feb. 27, join the Collections Conundrums roundtable, which will explore the issues of a historical organization’s collections processes and policies.
On March 26, join Eileen Corcoran, Director of Service and Outreach to explore the challenges posed by running a non-profit organization. Register at tinyurl.com/2p8xuu39.
