Vermont teams compete at Norwich

NORTHFIELD, VT — After making the long trek to Burlington for multiple meets over the past few weeks, Bellows Falls, Springfield and Windsor made a slightly shorter trip north on Saturday, Jan. 6, when they competed at Norwich University. The meet at Norwich featured running and jumping events, while the throwers competed across the river at Dartmouth College.

Bellows Falls led the local teams in the girls meet by tying for 5th place with 21 points. Springfield earned 6 points to finish 13th and Windsor earned 15th with 4 points.

Hadley Gleim had a big day for Bellows Falls with 2nd place finishes in the 55-meter dash (7.98 seconds) and triple jump (28’10.5”). Gleim scored 16 points for the Terriers and established a personal record for this season in the triple jump. Other scoring members for Bellows Falls included Gillian Robb, who finished 6th in the 1,000-meter run (4:05.60), and Desi Broadley who placed 7th in the 300-meter dash (48.12).

Erica Knudsen led Springfield with a 5th place finish in the 1,000-meter run (3:59.61). The Cosmos also earned points from a 6th place finish by their 4 x 200-meter relay team, which consisted of Ella Donahue, Quinn Jasinski, Marie Niemann, and Mackenzee Moore. Emma Simino earned all of Windsor’s points with a 5th place finish in the 600-meter run (2:00.17).

Springfield posted 32.5 points to place 5th in the boys meet. Bellows Falls recorded 9 points to finish 9th and Windsor earned 12th place with 4 points.

Springfield’s one-two punch in the hurdles continued their success this winter with Adam Sanborn earning gold (8.77) and Marshall Simpson claiming silver (9.58). Sanborn also placed 3rd in triple jump (37’10”) and tied for 5th in long jump (17’10.5”) to post 19.5 points for the Cosmos. In addition to his performance in the 55-meter hurdles, Simpson joined Cooper Palmer, Cole Tomberg and Carter Tanner in the 4 x 200-meter relay, where they placed 4th in 1:46.01.

Bellows Falls’ Brandon Keller finished just behind Simpson in the 55-meter hurdles in 9.69 seconds, which was good for 3rd place. Jacob Stockman also scored for the Terriers with a 6th place performance in triple jump (29’8.25”). Justin Draper was the lone scorer for Windsor with a 5th place finish in the 55-meter dash (7.15).

St. Johnsbury was the winning team in the girls meet with 132.5 points and Thetford narrowly held off Hartford (88-86.5) in the boys competition.
