The Fall Mountain Regional School District SAU 60 announced that Superintendent Christopher Spence has resigned effective August 4 after only about a year on the job, and will be starting a new role as the superintendent for the Utica City School District in New York on August 5.
According to a press release by the Utica City School District Board of Education, Spence said he is “eager to contribute to the continued success and growth of Utica’s diverse student population.” Spence is replacing Utica’s interim superintendent Kathleen Davis.
“I am deeply committed to leveraging the diversity within the Utica community as a foundation for fostering understanding, empathy and respect among students, staff, parents, caregivers and community members,” Spence said in the release.
Spence was hired for the superintendent role at Fall Mountain in April 2023 and started on July 1. He was the former assistant superintendent in the Rochester, N.Y. School District and has a bachelor’s degree from Hilbert College in Hamburg, as well as two master’s degree’s from State University of New York (SUNY) Buffalo’s English Education and English Administration programs, and two certificates from SUNY Buffalo in the disciplines of School District and Building Leader.
School Board Chair Alissa Bascom said that Spence’s resignation from SAU60 and the Fall Mountain Regional School District came through a letter received by the school board on Wednesday, July 10. She expressed confidence moving forward in a brief email response to several questions about the what the future holds.
“SAU60 and the Fall Mountain Regional School District are in a good position moving forward with the current administrative team that is in place, and the plan the school board has implemented for 24-25 school year,” Bascom wrote.
Attempts to reach Spence for comment were unsuccessful and a message was not returned.
The Fall Mountain Regional School District made the announcement on their Facebook page, but did not offer additional information other than the school board was meeting on Friday to discuss plans for the future. The meeting took place after deadline.
