Marc Hathaway was the first full-time county attorney for Sullivan County, and after 37 years he is hanging up the cleats and entering the retirement phase of life.

On Monday, the Sullivan County Board of Commissioners honored Hathaway for his service with a proclamation at the beginning of the meeting, surrounded by loved ones and county employees.

“I have loved my time here at Sullivan County and one of the things I’m glad everyone understands in the community is that this has been a collaborative effort,” said Hathaway, who stood alongside his wife, Mary, holding a framed proclamation given to him by the commissioners.

Commissioner Benny Nelson read the proclamation aloud to start their meeting, saying that Hathaway has been a “loyal and dedicated county attorney.”

“Marc Hathaway’s career is defined by honesty, integrity, advocacy for justice and a record of protecting our region’s most vulnerable,” Nelson said.

He started his career path as a county attorney with a focus on alleviating the drug problem within the community and promised law enforcement emphasis.

“These efforts, coupled with partnerships and efforts from local law enforcement officials, resulted in a series of successful and significant drug investigations, illustrated within his first year as county attorney,” Nelson said.

Nelson added that he has served, guided and led the county attorney office with kindness, compassion and loyalty. Hathaway, he said, has been supportive of those in the office for their personal growth, and has provided a collaborative spirit, calmness and mentorship.

“Since 1987, he has served, guided, and assisted all county leadership and other county elected officials through challenges they faced, helping them provide ethical and equitable service,” Nelson said. “For these reasons and more, we thank you for your service to Sullivan County and congratulate you on your retirement. We extend our best wishes to you. Enjoy your retirement to the fullest.”

Hathaway thanked those who have helped him along the way and stressed that any work done out of his office has been with the assistance of those within the county offices.

“Sullivan County has done wonderful things for me,” Hathaway said. “I have been blessed with the most recent group of most wonderful assistants and staff members. Anything we have accomplished here in Sullivan County is a result of a collaborative effort and the willingness of our office, the personnel in our office, the commissioners’ support, the law enforcement support efforts. If nothing else, you can’t do it alone. It is a team effort.”
