Hazel G. (Smith) White

NEWPORT, NH –Hazel Gerturude (Smith) White was born June 28, 1929 in Newport, NH. She was the daughter of the late Robert Ellsworth and Marguerite Phoebe (Gass) Smith. Hazel married her loving husband, Leon Orson White, Jr. of Windsor, VT, on October 12, 1948.  They were married until December 23, 1978 at which time he passed away.
Hazel attended the Newport, NH, Schools growing up. During her school years she enjoyed being a member of 4-H. After she graduated, she worked at nearby businesses and factories such as, M.H. Fisherman’s as a Cashier and department manager, International Shoes, a Cashier at the Claremont Drive-In, and Sportwelt Shoe. As well as out of the area at S.S. Pierce in Connecticut. Later in her years she became employed at the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company and retired from there when the factory moved from the area.
Hazel lived in Claremont, NH on Cedar Street, in the ‘little home’ she and her husband had purchased over 66 years ago.  She loved her ‘little home’ as she called it and stayed living there until she passed. She enjoyed tending to her flowers and bushes that surrounded her home, watching the wild birds gather at their feeders that she faithfully kept filled.  She had many little dogs that she cared for lovingly over the many years of her life. She enjoyed having gatherings of all sorts at her home.  She entertained with cookouts, birthdays, holiday meals and any other celebrations at her home throughout the many years of her life. Hazel did not have children of her own, so she took great delight in having nieces and nephews over, as well as the neighbour’s children coming over to visit. She especially enjoyed the Halloween season when the neighbourhoodchildren came in costume, and always shared how funny or creative their costumes were.  She also enjoyed the Christmas season and the decorations she had to set out-especially her snowmen.
Hazel was a strong, independent woman who persevered in all seasons of her life. She lived her life to the fullest even to her end.  She had a strong work ethic, intent on family connections, took care of her own home care, took trips with family, friends and the seniors from the Senior Center, which she was a member of for many years.  She was a past member of the Faith Tabernacle Church in Rockingham, VT.  It was there that she received the Lord Jesus as her Saviour. She later moved her membership to the Bow Baptist Church in Weathersfield, VT, where she maintained her membership till her passing.
Hazel was predeceased by her parents, her husband Leon of 30 years, her beloved nephew Michael H. Robinson, her sisters Priscilla LeBlanc and Thelma Mae Robinson, and her brother Maurice Earl Smith. She is survived by her nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at The Stringer Funeral Home, on Broad Street, Claremont, NH. on Monday, September 9th at 2PM. Visiting hour will be from 1 to 2 PM prior to the service. A graveside burial will follow at the Mountain View Cemetery. The Funeral will be Officiated by Retired Pastor Walter McDaniel.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Bow Baptist Church of Weathersfield, VT, the Claremont Animal Hospital, Claremont, NH; or another charity of your choice.
Hazel will be missed, and remembered for her giving of her time, care and generosity towards others.
