NEWPORT, NH – Mary Stout passed to the next life on the evening of August 27, 2024. Several family members were with her. Mary spent her final weeks at Woodlawn Care Center sharing a room with her husband of 68 years, Elmer Stout. In early July she had been diagnosed with cancer.
Born Mary Elizabeth Moyer on October 26, 1937, at Pottstown Hospital (Pennsylvania) as the only child to parents Landis Moyer and Irma (Schlicher) Moyer, of Boyertown, Pennsylvania. Mary graduated Boyertown High School in 1955, then completed cosmetology school.
Married to Elmer E. Stout Jr. on June 2, 1956, at Good Shepherd Church in Boyertown, she was a stay-at-home mother to her three sons and two daughters born in the following nine years.
The family lived in Pennsylvania until 1965 when they moved to Southbridge, Massachusetts for one year, then to Newport, New Hampshire in the fall of 1966.
Mary worked at the Newport High School cafeteria, and as clerk, cashier and bookkeeper at various Newport businesses including Coronis Market, Woodhull’s Market, Violette’s Supermarket, nand Butson’s Supermarket. She was also a volunteer at the Hospital Thrift Shop.
Mary and Elmer also resided in Goshen, Croydon, and Sunapee at various times. Locally, they were members of the South Congregational Church and the Croydon Church. After retirement, they returned to Pennsylvania to help Mary’s mother in her final years.
The most important times in Mary’s life centered around family, both locally and in visits to Florida, and trips to Pennsylvania to visit her mother and stepfather. The Pennsylvania Dutch foods she’d return home with were always enjoyed by family.
Mary especially anticipated the annual Christmas gathering where approximately 40 family
members would join for food and Yankee Swap.
Mary cherished certain handed-down family photos and furniture pieces, collected decorative teapots, and was an avid reader of new fiction provided by Richards Free Library, especially convenient to her final home on Pearl Street.
Mary was predeceased by her father, mother, and stepfather, Alvin Bensing.
She is survived by her husband Elmer Stout, Newport. Her sons Gregory (Ann), and Jeffery
(Belinda) of Newport; and Brian (Patricia) of White River Junction. Daughters Donna Geyer (Mark) of Indiana, and Patricia Quimby (Frank) of Newport.
Fifteen grandchildren: Maria, Jeremy (Jacqueline), Jacob (Keri), Rachel, Monica, Dominic, and Julia Stout. Grandchildren Edward (Jennifer), Joshua (Brittany) Stout , and Sharissa Sowell (Patrick). Grandchildren David and Timothy Umbrecht. Granddaughter Emily Stout (Kevin). Grandsons Scott and Douglas Quimby.
She is also survived by great grandchildren Dylan, Caleb, Hayden, Bryce and Leah Palmer, and Henry and Joey Stout, as well as cousins and a niece, and a sister-in-law.
A private service for the family will be held in early September with a local burial thereafter. Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Donations in Mary’s memory can be made to Richards Free Library, 58 N. Main St., Newport, NH 03773.
