NEWPORT, NH– On Thursday, September 19, 2024, John Jed “Jack” Marcotte, loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away at the age of 89. Jack was born in Newport, New Hampshire on April 19, 1935 to Goldie DeCato Marcotte and John Jed Marcotte. Later he had his stepfather, Charles Robertson.
Jack attended Newport schools graduating from Towle High School in the class of 1954. That same year, Jack was the first person selected for the Shrine Maple Sugar Bowl football game, but Jack chose to join the United States Marines for the next two years.
When he returned, he went to work for the Stone Vault Company, which he eventually purchased, and later, Goodrich Oil Company. In 1960, he joined the Newport Fire Department. During that time, he worked his way from lieutenant, captain, deputy chief, and in 1988, became the fire chief until his retirement in 1998.
In 1961, he married the love of his life, his “little sweetie,” Maureen Barbara Onnela. They raised their family in Newport, daughter Melinda “Mindy” Rae and their son Christopher John.
Jack was an avid hunter of deer, moose, and elk with his favorite gun, Bessy, and his bow. There were many hunting adventures, but most of all he loved his cottage on Rocky Bound Pond in Croydon, New Hampshire. He enjoyed being with his family and friends, playing cards, doing puzzles, and an occasional trip to the casino.
He was predeceased by his mother, father, step-father, brother-Terry, sister-Tomasina, and step-brother-Roger. He leaves behind his wife of 63 years, Maureen, and their children, Mindy (Philip) Newcomb and Chris (Kelly) Marcotte, two granddaughters, Malory (Jeremy) Tetreault, Meredith (Tyler) Wilcox, two great grandsons, Lawson and Mack, one great granddaughter, Andi, sister, Mary (George) McGowan, brother, Tim, brother-in-law Kevin (Debbie) Onnela, and many nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2024, from 1-4pm at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home, 42 Main Street in Newport, New Hampshire.
