Vermont student dies in crash

BELLOWS FALLS, Vt. — Last week, a Bellows Falls Union High School sophomore was killed in a single-vehicle accident when he crashed his pickup truck on Brockway Mills Road.

On Oct. 22 at about 9:58 a.m., the Springfield Police Department was dispatched to the area of Brockway Mills Road near the intersection of Mays Road in Springfield, according to information released by the department. The report was for a single vehicle crash, but the severity was not reported, and it was unknown if the operator was injured.

Upon arrival, officers located a vehicle that was overturned on its roof, and the operator was entrapped inside and unresponsive. Springfield Fire Department personnel arrived on the scene and extracted the operator, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of the accident is under investigation and no other details were being released by the police. Parents reportedly did not give permission to release the name.

The name of the victim is not being released as he is a minor. The Brattleboro Reformer reported that it was a 16-year-old sophomore at Bellows Falls Union High School, and he was on his way from classes at River Valley Technical Center in Springfield to Bellows Falls Union High School. Parents gave the student permission to make this drive.

The report by The Brattleboro Reformer said that a notice was sent out to the school community, and students and staff were encouraged to reach out to school officials if they needed additional support.

A voicemail was left with Andrew Haas, superintendent of the Windham Northeast Supervisory Union, but not returned by deadline.
