CONCORD, N.H. — The New Hampshire Department of Safety, Division of Fire Safety announces State Fire Marshal Sean P. Toomey has joined the International Code Council’s board of directors as director at large.
The ICC is a nonprofit standards organization and, according to its website, is “the leading global source of model codes and standards and plays a crucial role in building safety solutions. Their comprehensive approach includes product evaluation, accreditation, technology, training and certification.” Codes, standards, and solutions set by the ICC help to ensure safe, affordable and sustainable communities and buildings worldwide.
State Fire Marshal Toomey has extensive training and experience in building safety, fire codes and fire investigations. In his role, he oversees all functions of the division, including the Bureau of Building Safety & Construction, which is responsible for statewide programs related to building and fire codes and standards intended to help minimize the risk of fire in places like public buildings, school campuses and health care facilities.
“New Hampshire has made significant strides in responsibly advancing state building and fire codes,” said Toomey. “I believe the knowledge and experience I have gained working here has helped prepare me for this opportunity, and I am looking forward to serving the members of the ICC.”
In addition to serving on the ICC’s board of directors, Toomey also holds several other key positions in the fire safety community, including serving as secretary and treasurer of the National Association of State Fire Marshals’ (NASFM) Board of Directors.
Toomey graduated from the University of New Hampshire with a degree in Civil Engineering in 1998 and, in 2001, earned a master’s degree in fire protection engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. He is also a licensed professional engineer and formerly served as Deputy Fire Chief at the Concord Fire Department.
Toomey became a Deputy State Fire Marshal in 2018 and was appointed as the State Fire Marshal and Director of the Division of Fire Safety by Gov. Sununu in 2021.
