Stevens falls in nailbiter in D3 finals

Girls Soccer 

St. Thomas Aquinas 1, Stevens 0 

Stevens created several strong scoring opportunities, but was unable to convert, as they dropped a 1-0 decision against third-seeded St. Thomas Aquinas in the NHIAA Division 3 State Championship game. The game remained scoreless until St. Thomas Aquinas scored on a free kick from 25 yards out with only nine minutes left on the clock. It was the only goal allowed by Stevens (16-4) throughout their four-game playoff run.  

St. Thomas Aquinas (17-1-2) outscored its opponents by a combined score of 5-0 throughout the postseason.  

Cross-Country Running 

Bellows Falls sophomore Desi Broadley had another standout performance on Saturday at the New England Cross Country Championships in Manchester, Connecticut. Broadley finished 43rd overall out of the 254 competitors and was the eighth Vermont runner to cross the finish line after completing the 5k course in 19:23.  

Kearsarge senior Daniel Dalbec also competed in the prestigious race, placing 150th out of 256 competitors in 17:33.  

Local athletes earn SVL honors 

Several local athletes earned All-Southern Vermont League (SVL) honors in multiple sports this fall.  

After winning the Division 3 State Championship, Green Mountain’s Derek Hodgdon, Evan Kirdzik, Max Peebles, Andrei Solzhenitsyn, and Tanner Swisher earned All-SVL First Team C Division honors, and Jake Walker was named Coach of the Year. Bellows Falls’ Malik Gordon and Springfield’s Mateo Fuentes and Carter Tanner were among a group of players who joined the Green Mountain five on the first team.  

Green Mountain’s Raz Backland, Wyatt Koch, and Theo Schilling earned honorable mentions, along with Springfield’s Cole Tomberg, Nick Wiese, and Braden Wright, and Bellows Falls’ Tristan Boylan.  

In girl’s soccer, Windsor led the way with four members on the All-SVL First Team C Division after winning the Division 3 State Championship. The Yellow Jackets were represented by Avery Ducharme, Sophia Rockwood, Audrey Rupp, and Kenzie Wescott. Springfield’s Ella Donahue and Macie Stagner, Green Mountain’s Kyra Burbela and Linsey Miles, and Bellows Falls’ Laura Kamel also made the first team.  

Green Mountain’s Donnia Blagrove, Autumn Fales, and Lexi Martin, Springfield’s Kymber Considine, Amelia Murchie, and Kylie Nadeau, Bellows Falls’ Aubrey Maxfield and Abby Nystrom, and Windsor’s Brianna Barton earned honorable mentions.  

Springfield’s Samantha Metcalf was named the C Division Coach of the Year.
