CHESTER, Vt. — A Springfield man allegedly crashed his vehicle into a historic building in Chester while driving under the influence, left the scene, and was later arrested at his home.

Charles A. Johnson, 57, of Springfield, Vermont, was arrested on Jan. 22 and charged with DUI and Leaving the Scene of an Accident.

According to information released by the Chester Police Department, at about 6:21 p.m. officers responded to 1828 Reunion House, located at 5527 Vermont Road, for a report of a vehicle that had crashed into the building. It was also reported to police that the operator was gone from the scene.

“At the conclusion of the investigation, Johnson was located at his residence in Springfield, and he was arrested for DUI and Leaving the Scene of a Crash,” the report stated. “He was transported to the Springfield Police Department for processing and then released to a sober party with a citation to appear in court at a later date.”

The 1828 Reunion House is a farmhouse that was built in 1828, and according to its website has retained its “planked floors and spacious windows.” It sleeps up to 16 people and is intended for large family reunions, weddings, birthday celebrations, corporate events and college reunions.

Police did not include how much damage was caused to the vehicle or the building. A spokesperson for the 1828 Reunion House responded to an email, saying nobody was hurt and there was little damage done to the building.

“No injuries,” spokesperson Peg Fitzgerald said in the email. “Looks like damage is not severe. We are thankful the man driving was not hurt. Just another project on a lovely old home from 1828!”

A voicemail was left with Police Chief Thomas Williams but not immediately returned.

Johnson was cited for a court date on Feb. 11, to appear at the Windsor County Superior Court-Criminal Division to face the charges.
