WEATHERSFIELD BOW, VT– Alice E. Young, 97, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2025. She was born April 2, 1927 in Cavendish, Vermont to Mabel and Scott Allen. Her father was killed in an accident just before Alice was born.
As a young girl, Alice was strong and independent, caring for her ill mother while only a teenager. At only 16, when her mother died, she was on her own until she met her husband, Kenneth Young at the Olde Time Ball in Reading, Vermont. They married in June 1947 and spent 65 wonderful years together raising five children on the family farm.
Alice and Ken enjoyed dancing whenever they could, going to country fairs, visiting the Amish country in Pennsylvania and working the farm together. Alice loved cooking, canning her own garden bounty and tending her flower gardens. In her later years, she had a cat named Trixie, which became her spoiled child. Most important to her was having all her family together to celebrate birthdays and holidays. And always with lots of good food, in particular hot rolls, breads and pies – all from scratch of course! Having sons and their families on each side of her home brought her much happiness. Her “boys” would race to clear away any snow in the winter, knowing that whoever got there first would be paid with a fresh loaf of warm homemade bread!
Alice loved the water, especially the ocean. While Ken preferred being in the hayfield or working with his horses, Alice did “her thing” at the ocean with girlfriends and her daughters. As recently as three summers ago she spent a week at the coast with her three daughters, always teasing them to join her in the cold ocean water. They usually declined.
Alice is survived by her five children: Linda Murgatroy, Janet Young, Sandra (& Bob) Messer, Ken (& Janice) Young, and Keith (& Kellie) Young, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Her passing leaves a big hole in all of our hearts and we take comfort in knowing she is dancing in Heaven with her husband whom she has greatly missed these past twelve years.
Calling hours will be Thursday, January 30th, from 5-8PM at the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield, Vermont. A family graveside service will be held in the spring. In lieu of flowers, please give an extra hug to your loved ones and make a donation to the Springfield Humane Society, 401 Skitchewaug Trail, Springfield, VT 05156.
