Basketball Roundup: Newport sweeps close contests with Stevens

Boys Basketball 

Newport 56, Stevens 50 

NEWPORT, N.H. — Stevens held a 17-11 edge by the end of the first period, but Newport outscored the Cardinals in each of the ensuing quarters to come away with the victory. Aaron Fellows (20), Christian Forsythe (17), and Adrian Sanchez (12) did most of the damage in the scoring column for Newport. Nevin Marsh had a game-high 21 points for Stevens, Justin McGuire was next with 11, and Owen Wilkinson added eight. Newport (10-4) has a home-and-away series against Hillsboro-Deering on the slate this week, while Stevens (3-10) heads to Winnisquam for its next contest on Friday.  

Thetford 74, Windsor 46 

WINDSOR, Vt. — Isaac Becker had a night to remember for the Yellow Jackets, sinking seven threes and posting 21 points, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Thetford who improved to 12-2 on the season. Hunter Clay was Thetford’s leading scorer with 22 points. Kobin Shute added 12 points for Windsor (3-11) who heads to Hartford on Friday for a 7 p.m. tipoff.  

Girls Basketball 

Newport 47, Stevens 41 

NEWPORT, N.H. — Stevens put forth a strong effort, but fell short against Newport who improved to 11-3 on the season. Skylar Nelson paced the Tigers with 17 points, Zoey Lord was next with 16, and Cassie Sanborn added nine. Bailey Morin (11) and Audrina Pelton (8) were the top scorers for the Cardinals. Newport has a home-and-away series against Hillsboro-Deering remaining this week, while Stevens (4-9) hosts Winnisquam on Friday at 7 p.m. 

Windsor 49, Hartford 46 

WHITE RIVER JUNCTION, Vt. — Sophia Rockwood posted 23 points to help Windsor pull past Hartford (10-3) for an impressive road victory. Kemari Wildgoose added 12 points and 10 rebounds, and Amelia Rockwood posted nine points for the Yellow Jackets. Hartford’s Charlotte Jasmin had a game-high 31 points. Windsor has another tough matchup slated for Saturday when host Fair Haven at 2:30 p.m.
