Basketball Roundup: Newport wins back-and-forth thriller

Girls Basketball 

Newport 45, Hopkinton 42 

HOPKINTON, N.H. — Newport outscored the Hawks 23-7 in the third quarter to claim a 38-24 edge entering the final frame, but the game was far from over on Tuesday night in Hopkinton. The Hawks battled back to tie the game at 42 with 25 seconds remaining, but Skylar Nelson connected on two free throws just nine seconds later to help Newport secure the victory.  

Newport (13-3) featured a balanced scoring led by Zoey Lord (10), Skylar Nelson (9), Brooklyn Ranney (8), Cassie Sanborn (8) and Tori Williams (7). Shaylee Murdough paced Hopkinton (10-5) with 16 points and Sydney Westover added 13.  

Windsor 52, Springfield 45 

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Springfield put forth a strong effort to come within single digits of a Windsor squad, which defeated them by 32 points earlier this season. Audrey Rupp paced Windsor (12-2) with 16 points, Kemari Wildgoose was next with eight, and Amelia Rockwood added seven. Springfield (6-10) featured seven players who scored, led by 29 points from Macie Stagner.  

Stevens 43, Mascoma 36 

CANAAN, N.H. — Stevens entered the half with a 23-19 advantage, and held on for its sixth victory of the season. Lily Eagan was the top scorer for Stevens (6-9) with 13 points, Bailey Morin followed with 12 and Audrina Pelton added eight.  

Boys Basketball 

Springfield 68, Long Trail 56 

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — The Cosmos exploded for 39 first half points and entered the break with a 14-point advantage. Bradley Gallant led four Springfield (7-8) players in double figures with 17 points, Nick Wiese had 15, Ollie Kelley followed with 14 and Jameer Cosby added 11. Jack Dickerson was Long Trail’s (4-11) top scorer with 22 points.  

Woodstock 59, Green Mountain 44 

WOODSTOCK, Vt. — Tanner Swisher had a big night for Green Mountain (11-6) with 24 points, but it wasn’t enough as Woodstock (10-6) took a 55-30 lead into the final frame before cruising to victory. Elvis Lavallee scored 24 points and Curtis Samuel added 17 for the victors.
