Hazel M. Winn

NEWPORT, NH– Our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, great-aunt and great-great aunt, Hazel Mae Winn, 98, of Newport, N.H., passed peacefully at Cedar Hill Nursing Home in Windsor, VT on February 7, 2025. She was born at her parent’s 12-A Walnut Street home on September 22, 1926.

Hazel graduated from Northampton Commercial College in Massachusetts on May 1, 1945. She had several jobs including Public Service Co. and Silsby and Johnson before becoming a bookkeeper and then administrator of the Woodlawn Nursing Home in Newport until she retired.

Hazel married Robert A. Winn on June 19, 1948 and they were happily married for 60 years. Together, they enjoyed camping, golfing, bowling, shuffleboard, and motorcycling across the country. Hazel and Bob were active members of the Church of the Good Shepherd. You could always find mom at the church, making fried dough at the Sunday band concerts on the common.  After retirement, Robert and Hazel spent 23 amazing winters in Fort Meyers, Florida.

Hazel was honored at the John Cain Golf Club in Newport, N.H. for her hole-in-one on the 4th hole at age 75, and went zip-lining for the first time at 85. She walked a mile or more daily, even into her early 90’s.

To know Hazel was to adore Hazel. Her kindness and light spirit could brighten anyone’s day. Her list of birthday cards sent each year continued to grow and grow. The gesture of sending a handwritten card was one she truly valued as she cared so deeply for her family, friends and even acquaintances.

Hazel was predeceased by her loving parents, Harold and Ruth Campbell, her husband, Robert Asa Winn; brothers Arnold Campbell (and wife Pearl), Hal Campbell (and wife Mary), sister Marjorie Apolczer (and husband John), nieces Amber Benson and Judy Winn, as well as many friends.

She is survived by her daughters April Freeman and husband Larry, Candy Fuller and husband Dave; four grandchildren Lauren Freeman, Gregory Freeman, Ben Fuller and Kristen Bruso and husband Ira; five great-grandchildren Maddox, Cooper, Khloi, McKenzie and Lauren’s baby-to-be, Willow; along with many loving nephews, nieces and friends. As Mom always said, “We come from good stock.”

Calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 15 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm with special remarks at 3:30 at the Newton-Bartlett Funeral Home. There will be a Zoom link for those who can’t attend. The link will be posted on the Newton-Bartlett site.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Cedar Hill Entertainment Fund, Cedar Hill Continuing Care Community, 49 Cedar Hill Dr., Windsor, VT 05089. Hazel loved the musical entertainment and enjoyed crafting with the residents.
