Basketball Roundup: Newport, Kearsarge advance to quarterfinals

No. 7 Newport 66, No. 10 Newfound 46 

NEWPORT, N.H. — A three-pointer by Aaron Fellows just before the final buzzer of the first half gave Newport all the momentum they needed during their first-round playoff victory on Tuesday at Wheeler Gym. The Tigers entered the second half with a 29-20 advantage before exploding for 25 points during the third quarter. Holding a commanding 54-31 lead entering the final frame, Newport was able to cruise to the quarterfinals over the final eight minutes.  

Fellows went off for 30 points and Christian Forsythe added 20.  

Newport (14-5) will head to Mascoma Valley for its quarterfinal contest on Friday. Mascoma defeated the Tigers 49-33 during their only matchup of the season on Feb. 13.  

No. 3 Kearsarge 57, No. 14 Conant 38 

NORTH SUTTON, N.H. — The third-seeded Cougars held a 31-21 halftime lead and continued to add to their lead after the break to advance to the NHIAA Division 3 Quarterfinals.  

Austin Needham (16), Noah Whipple (14) and Ajay Tremblay (12) each scored in double figures for Kearsarge. Jared Nagle tossed in 19 points for Conant.  

Third-seeded Kearsarge (17-2) is slated to host sixth-seeded Gilford on Friday. The Cougars defeated Gilford 61-51 when they squared-off on Feb. 14.  

No. 2 Mascoma Valley 57, No. 15 Stevens 46 

CANAAN, N.H. — After suffering a 35-point defeat against Mascoma just days earlier, Stevens managed to stay close in the rematch on Tuesday night at Edward P. Kehoe Gymnasium.  

Jacoby Roberts led Stevens with 19 points, Owen Wilkinson was next with nine, and Jacob Davis had seven. Mascoma’s Tanner Moulton had a game-high 28 points.  

Mascoma (18-1) hosts Newport in the quarterfinals on Friday. Stevens finishes the season with a 4-13 record.  

Girls Basketball 

Windsor 60, Brattleboro 42 

WINDSOR, Vt. — Windsor earned its revenge against Division 1 foe Brattleboro after losing to the Bears earlier this season.  

Sophia Rockwood paced Windsor with 18 points, Amelia Rockwood was next with 12, and Brianna Barton added nine.  

Windsor (14-2) heads to Fair Haven on Friday for a 7 p.m. tipoff. The Slaters defeated Windsor 51-45 on Feb. 8.
