George E. Sabin

CHARLESTOWN, NH– George Elbert Sabin, Jr., 86, passed in the comfort of his home after a period of declining health.

George was born December 17, 1938 in Townshend, VT to the late George Sr. and Nellie Sabin.  He grew up in Charlotte and Wolcott, VT.  He moved to multiple other places throughout Vermont during his childhood including being help on a few dairy farms. He enjoyed living in Wolcott near his Uncle Roy and Aunt Alice Sabin and his grandparents Walter and Delle Sabin for a period of time as well.

George enlisted in the Air Force in 1957.   He had typist training at F.E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, WY and then served as a transcriber typist at Lindsey Air Station USAFE headquarters in Wiesbaden, Germany.   He often spoke fondly of the time he spent in Germany.

After being discharged in 1960, George joined his brother Lee to start a new life in California.   There he met his wife Clara at Bellflower Baptist Church and married in 1963 and was a transcriber typist for the Los Angeles County Probation Dept.

George missed Vermont stability, the winters and the family still there so he moved his wife and 2 children to Bellows Falls VT in 1973 and then bought their home of the last 51 years in Charlestown, NH in 1974.   He had various jobs, including being a commercial truck driver, department store security officer, typist, and later, kitchen help.   He enjoyed fishing, collecting miniature cars, road trips to Branson, and playing the harmonica for the Charlestown Senior Center Silver Tones.

He is survived by his wife Clara J. (McCulla) Sabin, son Ronald Sabin, daughter Cathleen Chase, granddaughter Jessica Weigel and her husband Hayden, great-grandchildren Noah and Alaina Weigel, sister Martha Smith, sister Marjorie Pickett, sister Linda Cothran, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son-in-law Warren Chase and all 6 of his brothers – Lawrence, Lee, Kenneth, Clifton, Maurice and Mason.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Berean Baptist Church, located at 928 John Stark Hwy, Newport NH on March 7th at 10:30AM followed by a Pot Luck Lunch.

The family wishes to express our deep appreciation for the dedication and professionalism of the Lake Sunapee VNA in our time of need.
