To the Editor:
The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services will hold a public hearing on Thursday, March 6th, to address Acuity Management, Inc.’s plan for a massive dump-and-ship waste operation in Claremont.
Residents of Claremont and neighboring towns oppose Acuity’s plan to import 3,000 tons of mixed-construction and demolition waste (C&D) into the city each week, turning an existing, local recycling business into one of the largest C&D waste depots in New Hampshire.
The scale of Acuity’s proposal and the risks it would bring to our environment and health are unacceptable and unnecessary. New Hampshire and the region must move toward better management of C&D waste with source segregation of materials at both construction and demolition sites and at transfer stations.
Allowing Acuity’s plan to go forward would limit the region’s options for a better future while damaging local infrastructure. Increased truck traffic accessing Claremont on local streets and highways would impact a number of towns, including Newbury, Sunapee, Newport and Charlestown.
We invite our neighbors to join us at the Claremont Opera House on Thursday, March 6 at 6 p.m. Please support a growing local effort to protect Sullivan County from Acuity’s misguided and dangerous plan. Your attendance at the hearing will make a difference.
