Basketball Roundup: Bellows Falls & Green Mountain slated for round 3 in D3 playoffs

Girls Basketball 

Green Mountain 33, Rivendell 31 

CHESTER, Vt. — Green Mountain entered halftime with a 16-13 edge before its lead grew to 11 points in the final frame. 

Despite facing a double-digit deficit with only five minutes to play, Rivendell had an opportunity to tie the game on the final possession, but their final shot fell short as time expired.  

Colie Roby was the top scorer for Green Mountain (10-9) with 15 points and Sophia Cherubini tossed in 10.  

Otter Valley 45, Springfield 29 

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Springfield jumped out to an 8-2 lead on Senior Night at Dressel Gymnasium before Otter Valley battled back to enter the half with a 23-18 advantage.  

The Otters extended their lead during the second half to complete the season sweep against the Cosmos.  

Macie Stagner led the Cosmos with 26 points, bringing her career total to 1,853 points. Stagner now stands in 10th on the all-time scoring list for Vermont girl’s basketball.  

Springfield (7-13) earned the 11th seed in the Division 2 playoffs and will head to sixth-seeded Milton on Tuesday.  

West Rutland 45, Windsor 32 

WEST RUTLAND, Vt. — Windsor was engaged in a defensive struggle with the Golden Horde for most of the first half, until West Rutland went on a 9-2 run over the final three minutes to enter the break with a 16-10 edge.  

West Rutland extended its lead to 31-19 by the end of the third quarter on its way to evening the season series with the Yellow Jackets.  

Sophia Rockwood was Windsor’s top scorer with 14 points. Brianna Barton and Audrey Rupp added seven points apiece.  

Windsor (15-4) earned the third seed in the Division 3 playoffs and will host 14th-seeded Woodstock on Wednesday.  

Bellows Falls 49, Green Mountain 38 

CHESTER, Vt. — The Terriers raced out to a 23-10 halftime lead en route to completing the season sweep against Green Mountain.  

Abby Nystrom led Bellows Falls with 19 points and Laura Kamel was next with 16. 

Bellows Falls (15-5) will face Green Mountain (10-10) for the third time this season in the opening round of the Division 3 playoffs. The sixth-seeded Terriers will host 11th-seeded Green Mountain on Wednesday.  

Boys Basketball 

White River Valley 93, Bellows Falls 41 

SOUTH ROYALTON, Vt. — Bellows Falls Head Coach Evan Chadwick’s preseason goal of winning a state championship will have to wait another year after running into a buzzsaw in the quarterfinals.  

White River Valley held a 43-17 lead at halftime and continued to pour it on after the break to move to 22-0 on the season.  

Bellows Falls finished the season with an 11-11 record. Eli Allbee, Carson Clark, Andrew Dunbar, Will Hallock, Robert Roman and Douglas Sterling played in their final game for the Terriers.
