It was great getting a little tease this week with the weather we are all hoping arrives soon. There is nothing more enjoyable when we receive nice events in our lives. It is always a pleasure if you are fortunate to receive a refund on your yearly tax returns.
Have you been putting off preparing your 2024 tax return? There is no need to put it off any longer. AARP Volunteer Tax Aide is at the Newport Senior Center and ready to help. If you would like to schedule an appointment for free tax assistance, call 802-332-5348 and leave a message. One of the friendly AARP volunteers will call you back to schedule your appointment.
AARP volunteers will be back in May to assist you with submitting forms to receive a rebate on the school portion of your property tax bill. Stay tuned for more details as we get closer.
The weather was not as cooperative for us during the Newport Winter Carnival. The Newport Senior Center had to cancel its “Western Breakfast.” However, the breakfast has been rescheduled for Sunday, March 30 from 8 to 10 a.m.
Using Country Kitchen’s favorite recipe, we will be serving biscuits and gravy. Your plate is sure to be full when you add flap jacks and home-fries. This delicious meal will be complemented with a morning breakfast.
You have tried the rest, now have the best for only $10 per plate. This will be a first-come, first-serve event, until we are sold out. Be sure to be here early to reserve your seats. All proceeds will benefit the Newport Senior Center as we plan for our 2025 projects.
Safety is the focus of our projects this year. Currently, the electrical wires run along the roof connecting one pole to the other. The lines are in close proximity to the rooftop heating and cooling system. As a result, repair companies refuse to work on the rooftop units when needed. To make this safer for repairs, the power lines will be buried underground.
The parking lot has many cracks, dips and grooves creating potential fall risks. The imperfections cause water to pool up and ice over during winter weather. The ice becomes dangerous for our kitchen staff when they enter the building at 5:30 a.m. Meals-on-Wheels drivers also must cross these areas when preparing for deliveries.
The second parking lot remains gravel, since being purchased, and is difficult for walkers to roll. Neighbors are using the parking lot as travel lanes across our grass to their homes. I think everyone would agree that they would prefer that drivers not drive on their grass.
To address these safety concerns, the NSC will begin fundraising. The first fundraising event for the safety projects will be our annual appeal letters. Keep your eyes open for more information to be delivered to your mailboxes soon.
