Letters To Editor

Thank you to our federal elected officials

To the Editor:

I am writing to express my thanks to the Vermont Congressional delegation for their continued support for our environment. All three have high scores on the recently released League of Conservation Voters’ 2024 National Environmental Scorecard. The Vermont federal delegation’s scores for 2024 are: Sen. Bernie Sanders (I), 88% (91% lifetime); Sen. Peter Welch (D), 100% (95% lifetime); and Rep. Becca Balint (D), 100% (99% lifetime).

As a member of the board of directors for Vermont Conservation Voters, I’m proud to have leaders that are committed to safeguarding democracy and protecting our environment for my children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

It is a joy in these unsettling, frightening, and mystifying times that Vermont’s delegation stands firm against proposals that would roll back environmental and democratic protections.

Continue to oppose Acuity

To the Editor:
Thank you to the hundreds of citizens who came to the Claremont Opera House last week to oppose a dangerous project an out-of-state company wants to bring to Claremont Junction, near schools, residential neighborhoods and the Amtrak station. Between now and Thursday, March 27, the public can send a message urging the NH Department of Environmental Services to reject Acuity’s application to truck toxic construction and demolition waste into the city on a daily basis. The very idea that Sullivan County could be seen as suitable for such a facility is deeply alarming. Claremont is the center of commercial and recreational activity in our rural region. Its livable atmosphere would be utterly destroyed by the noise and disruption of a constant stream of heavy trucks full of mixed-waste and by the air pollution and road damage they would cause.

The long-term damage of such an operation can only be imagined. We see no advantage whatsoever in accepting Acuity’s proposal, neither in tax revenue, nor in jobs gained. On the other hand, Claremont benefits from its excellent health care facilities that provide good jobs, and from Chinburg Property’s redevelopment of the city’s historic mill sites. LCHIP-funded improvements to Claremont’s city hall and opera house place the city on an upswing. Let’s use that momentum to move forward. The last thing our state needs is more imported trash!
