NEWPORT, N.H. — Just like in the fairy tale of the “Three Little Pigs,” the brick house, in this case the Newport Senior Center, withstands the blustery winds we hear howling outside around us. The strong foundation allows us to be able to bring an array of activities to promote socialization, healthy living and strong connections with friends.
The indoor walking path is accessible daily from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Walkers will not have to be concerned with weather conditions. There are restrooms along the way and a bench for rest stops as needed.
Resting is not a word our guests understand. The downstairs recreation space is full of energy as individuals participate in Liliyan’s Legacy Exercise class each Tuesday and Thursday, from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. This class focuses on strength, balance and flexibility.
Complications of osteoporosis can be prevented, and even reversed, when one chooses to add strength training at least twice per week to their routine. Bone Builders is a great program for preventing osteoporosis and is offered each Tuesday and Thursday, for one hour, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
Chair yoga is an excellent way to improve range of motion, strengthen muscles and reduce stress and anxiety. Chair yoga is just another great activity offered each Wednesday, 9 to 10 a.m. The class is $8 per class.
Keeping the mind active is as important as keeping the body active. Playing card games like pitch, bingo and cribbage improves mental stimulation that results in improved memory, increased socialization and stimulates cognitive functions.
Added benefits of playing cards includes, reducing isolation, symptoms of depression and anxiety. Card games occur several days during the week. Stop by the Newport Senior Center to get your calendar of events to learn more about the time and day for each program or visit our Facebook page, Newport Senior Center Home of Sullivan County Nutrition Services (SCNS).
The seasoned kitchen staff, of SCNS, prepares daily lunches for adults 60+. All meals are reviewed and approved by a licensed dietician to ensure at least 1/3 of the daily recommended food groups are met.
Nutritious meals next week include main entrees like, stuffed chicken, tomato soup with garden vegetables, homemade mac & cheese, meatloaf, and potato crusted cod. All meals are complemented with a starch, vegetable, dessert and beverage.
Not only will you enjoy these filling, flavorful meals, but you will not find a better deal. This full course meal is available for a suggested donation of only $3. Yes, you read it right, only $3.
After lunch, be sure to stop by Alice’s Gift Shop to see what you cannot live without. The gift shop is a great place to find exceptional deals on yarns, puzzles, dishes, wall art and so much more.
AARP is at the center every Thursday, from now until April 15, to prepare free 2024 tax returns. Call 1-802-332-5348 to schedule your appointment. When scheduling your appointment, be sure to schedule your appointment before or after lunch (11:45 a.m.) and plan to join us for lunch.
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! May your troubles be less, and your blessing be more, and nothing but happiness, come through your door.
