SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Springfield Police Chief Jeff Burnham gave an update on a recent arrest of a Charlestown man for possession of cocaine, saying that their initial reported that officers responded to a call of a possible overdose, but it was actually the defendant passed out in the driver’s seat of his vehicle. 

Michael Sykie, 44, of Charlestown, was arrested by Springfield Police on March 2 for possession of cocaine. A report by Springfield Police state that police responded to a call about a potential overdose at 1:01 a.m., but Burnham later told the Eagle Times that there was no overdose involving Sykie or anyone else. Sykie was alone in the vehicle, Burnham said. 

“It was initially reported as an overdose, but it wasn’t,” Burnham said. “It was someone sleeping in a car, and after they talked and investigated, they found out he was in possession. There were no other people involved and the initial report was unfounded.” 

Sykie, who does not appear to have any other recent charges, does have a criminal history as he was arrested for three counts of drug sales in a 22-person drug sweep called Operation Holiday Harvest on Oct. 16, 2014. He was also arrested by Bellows Falls Police in 2014 for an obstruction of justice charge. 

Sykie is scheduled to appear in Windsor County Criminal Court on April 29 at 8:30 a.m. to answer to the charge of possession of cocaine. 

Man held as fugitive of justice 

A Lebanon man being held in the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield, Vermont, was ordered to appear in court on a Fugitive from Justice charge out of the state of New Hampshire. 

According to a report by the Springfield Police Department, on March 11 at about 9:58 a.m., Springfield Police was contacted by New Hampshire Probation and Parole to advise that Rocky Marsh, 42, of Lebanon, had a felony extraditable arrest warrant in New Hampshire.  

An officer went to the correctional facility and issued Marsh a criminal citation to appear in Windsor County Criminal Court on March 11 to answer to the charge. He was subsequently held at the Southern State Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 cash or surety bail.
