Springfield boy’s win home-opener

SPRINGFIELD, Vt. — Weather can be a significant challenge during the early going of the outdoor track & field season, but Springfield’s home-opener on April 22 featured ideal conditions that allowed several athletes to shine.  

The Cosmos cruised to victory on the boy’s side, posting 132 points to hold off Woodstock (80), Green Mountain (52) and Windsor (20).  

Senior standouts Adam Sanborn and Cam Williams led the way for Springfield with 34 points each. Sanborn won the 110-meter-high hurdles (15.94) and long jump (6.05 meters), tied for second in high jump (1.65 meters) and placed third in javelin (37.86 meters). Williams earned victories in high jump (1.75 meters) and the 400-meter dash (54.46), finished second in the 100-meter dash (12.10) and third in long jump (5.78 meters).  

Other event winners for Springfield included Hunter Ferland (shot put, discus), Carter Tanner (100-meter dash, 200-meter dash) and Tristin Stagner (300-meter hurdles). The Cosmos  4 x 100-meter relay of Stagner, Oliver Vandivere, Mateo Fuentes and Tanner also took the top spot for the hosts.  

Tanner Crane (second in long jump) and Justin Draper (third in 100-meter dash) produced the top finishes for Windsor.  

On the girl’s side, Woodstock and Green Mountain tied for first at 94.5 points. Springfield was next with 62 points and Windsor finished fourth with 26.  

Springfield’s event winners included Meadow Murchie (javelin), Harper Palmer (discus) and Sabyn Tennis (100-meter hurdles). Murchie and Palmer each set personal records in their winning performances. Palmer also secured second in shot put and Murchie placed third in the 400-meter dash.  

Windsor’s Olivia Dube and Emma Simino took the top two spots in the 800-meter run and Springfield’s Erica Knudsen rounded out the podium.  

Marz Percy was the other event winner for Windsor, claiming victory in shot put with a toss of 8.80 meters.
