Fort at No. 4 opens for 2025 season

CHARLESTOWN, N.H. — Spring has arrived in the Connecticut River Valley, and with it, the gates of history swing open once more at the Fort at No. 4. The Fort kicks off its 2025 season with a robust calendar of events, immersive experiences and a few new surprises for returning visitors.

The Fort at No 4, a full-scale reconstruction of the original 18th-century British colonial settlement, invites guests to step back into the 1740s — an era of homesteading, conflict and community on the edge of wilderness. Historical interpreters showcase daily life on the colonial frontier with demonstrations of blacksmithing, cooking, musket drills and traditional crafts, all set within the palisade walls that echo with the stories of New England’s earliest settlers.

This season, the Fort at No 4 is focusing on the diverse perspectives that shaped life at No. 4 — including Indigenous relations, women’s roles, and the complexities of colonial warfare. Weekend events will feature re-enactments, music, authors and workshops for visitors of all ages.

The season officially opens Saturday, May 3, and will highlight many of the trades that were necessary to life on the frontier. Come visit with the Blacksmith, the Joiner or the Baker. Learn all about how fabric was produced — from seed to shirt — and visit with a weapons from the period. Don’t miss an opportunity to scout the Connecticut River from the Tower or play games in the courtyard.

Located just off Route 11 in Charlestown, New Hampshire, the Fort at No. 4 is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, May through October. Whether you’re a history buff, a family on a weekend outing, or a curious traveler, the Fort invites you to cross the threshold into another century.
