UNITY, N.H. — A two-vehicle accident in Unity on Sunday afternoon sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries, and one of the vehicles plowed into a two-car garage at a North Shore Road residence on the corner of the intersection with Second N.H. Turnpike.
“From what I caught from the police on scene and what the subject said, it seems like someone coming off Gilman Pond Road did not notice the vehicle coming from the Lempster direction on Second N.H. Turnpike,” said Unity Fire Chief Tim Davis. “When that vehicle pulled out, they tried to stop but ended up hitting them.”
The accident, where a Dodge pickup truck hit a Subaru Outback, took place around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday. Davis explained that the Subaru ended up getting pushed into the garage at the corner of North Shore Road and Second N.H. Turnpike. There was one vehicle in the garage that sustained minor damage, and there was clear structural damage to the garage.
“It went through the garage door and started out the side of the building, about halfway out the left side of the garage,” Davis said.
He said N.H. State Police was the first to arrive, but no arrests were made, and it appears to have been “truly an accident.” Fortunately, there were only minor injuries, but officials were initially going to the scene with a report of entrapment. Thankfully, this was not the case, he said, and Golden Cross Ambulance transported one patient to Valley Regional Hospital.
“When it came across our dispatch it sounded pretty bad, but when we got there, it wasn’t as bad as how it sounded,” Davis said. “Like one of our senior guys said, we prepare for the worst and hope for the best, and this wasn’t as bad.”
The vehicles were towed by SG Reed Truck Services and Patten’s Auto and Truck Works.
The intersection is notorious for bad accidents, as Davis said there are stop signs but they aren’t always adhered to. He said fortunately this wasn’t a worse scenario and that injuries were not severe, or worse.
“We were lucky,” Davis said. “There have been some really bad accidents at that intersection there. This wasn’t good but it could have been way, way worse.”
